PC World overwrite data

Category: Data Recovery, Security, Tips, computer repair on November 3, 2011 @ 9:02 pm

Mach4 have been contacted on several occasions by customers that have taken their computers into PC World for repairs and upgrades and have lost their valuable data.

The latest customer had taken their PC into PC World for a motherboard replacement, on return, the PC worked fine, but all data and programmes were missing from the hard disk. PC World had overwritten the original operating system and data sectors of the hard disk and the data was irretrievable. Evidently, the customer had inadvertently signed a disclaimer warning them of data loss, but was not aware of the implications. The hard drive was not defective before or after the motherboard replacement.

Mach4 ALWAYS back up customer data before undertaking major repairs or upgrades and explain to our valued customers that, when a reinstallation of the operating system is necessary, they will not lose their valuable documents, music and digital image files, but will have to reinstall programmes with the original software, or download new software using their customer log-in on the vendor site.

Our examination of the hard disk confirmed that the data had been overwritten and, unfortunately, was not recoverable.

Regular back-up of valuable data onto an external device is recommended, particularly when taking the computer in for major repair, if this is not possible, customers should confirm with the technician that data will be retrieved and backed up prior to carrying out work on their computer. Of course such action is not necessary with Mach4 who will always work to the needs of the customer.

Save your Operating System!

Mach4 repair many notebook computers with damaged hard disk drives. Unfortunately, in the majority of cases, no system recovery disks are available.

Manufacturers traditionally supplied system recovery disks with new computers. This is not the case nowadays; Microsoft have enabled Windows to create a recovery partition on the hard disk during installation of the operating system (OS). It is the customer’s responsibility to purchase writeable DVD disks (or many more CDs) and make their own system recovery disks immediately after purchase, and the manufacturer inserts a warning during the first boot to advise the customer to do this.

Many customers ignore this warning as they do not understand its significance; if the hard disk fails, the recovery sector fails with it and it is then necessary to either obtain replacement system disks from the manufacturer or, if this is not possible, purchase a new Microsoft Windows licence (over £100 in most cases) and find appropriate hardware drivers online, a laborious and costly process.

If customers buy a system (notebook or desktop) from Mach4, all system recovery disks and driver disks are supplied with the computer so, should the hard disk fail in the future, the system and drivers are easily reinstalled onto the new drive.

We also recommend regular (at least weekly) back-up of important documents, images and music onto an external device (DVDs, flash drive or external hard disk), the more valuable the data, the more frequent the back-up.

If you’re unsure how to produce system recovery disks, Mach4 will be pleased to do it for you.

Repair or replace?

So, your desktop computer has stopped working and you face the quandary of whether to repair, or replace it with a new one.

Replace:

  • Cost from major retailer - £300 - £800
  • Cost from Mach4 from £200
  • You can retain the monitor, mouse and keyboard
  • The printer may not be compatible if it has an parallel port connection; most new motherboards do not support parallel ports and this function has been replaced by USB, ethernet or wireless printers (for some motherboards, an add on parallel port is possible).
  • If the hard disk is damaged, a new operating system may be required.
  • Files and settings transfer can be expensive is carried out as a stand-alone service by some IT technicians.
  • Programmes may have to be repurchased or replaced if supplied with the PC.
Repair
  • May cost as little as £40 from Mach4
  • May cost over £100 from high street - they really want to sell you a new one!
  • Unless hard drive is damaged, files, programmes and settings are usually preserved.
  • Motherboard replacement costs from £60
  • May be carried out in your home or office by Mach4
  • Environmentally responsible when possible.
Many options are available for desktop PC repair. Contact Mach4 for a chat!
